Reserved - Simon Van Gelderen, Still Life With Salmon

A fine 20th-century still life depicting a plate of salmon with oysters and wine by Belgian artist, Simon Van Gelderen (1905-1986).

There’s something visceral about this luscious assortment of food that appeals to the senses, even prior to cooking. The palette of warm tones creates an almost seductive atmosphere, which is further enhanced by oysters - an aphrodisiac. Perhaps it’s a piece for the bedroom rather than the kitchen…

Van Gelderen trained at the Academy in Brussels and he’s known for his still lifes, landscapes and interior scenes. In 2010, a similar still life with salmon and oysters sold for £2,277 at auction.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
