Sidney Yates Johnson, Pastoral Scene With Farmhouse

Sidney Yates Johnson, Pastoral Scene With Farmhouse

A charming early 20th-century pastoral scene by English artist, Sidney Yates Johnson (active 1880-1926). It depicts a shepherd guiding his flock along a muddy track past a beautiful old farmhouse. A few of the sheep seem to be veering towards a pond while the others behave themselves.

Sidney Yates Johnson was born in London but spent many of his years in Kent - particularly Canterbury and Sheerness. His views celebrated the best of British scenery across the Isles and his loose brushwork suited painting outdoors.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
