This mid-20th-century oil painting by Swedish artist Sam Uhrdin (1886-1964) depicts a young woman sewing within an interior.
As the light floods in through her favourite window, she carefully sews. Perhaps it’s the flowing fabric of a radiant golden dress. It’s a celebration of primary colours rendered in bold expressive marks. A vivid representation of a quiet passing moment.
Sam Uhrdin was a master of interiors. Paying homage to the past rather than embracing the present. His exquisitely rendered scenes reminisce about a simpler time in rural Sweden. When the pace was reassuring and the love for one’s family was unquestionable.
Such was Uhrdin’s virtuosity, that he could work with feeling while retaining a high degree of finesse. Interesting, also, to see the change of direction where the size of the golden fabric has been altered.
