Rudolf Hellgrewe, Landscape With Pine Trees & Lake

Rudolf Hellgrewe, Landscape With Pine Trees & Lake

A vibrant early 20th-century oil on canvas by German painter, Rudolf Hellgrewe (1860-1926). This large and impressive piece is masterfully rendered and it’s dominated by a huge pine tree rising vertically through the composition.

It’s possible that the view is located within Märkische Schweiz, which is in Eastern Germany close to Berlin. Hellgrewe studied at the Berlin Art Academy and ventured out to paint this area often. Märkische Schweiz features a beautiful lake that remains popular to this day - particularly for walkers and holidaymakers.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
