This beautiful late 19th-century landscape by British artist Robert Gallon (1845-1925) depicts a group of farm workers harvesting hay alongside a gently winding river. Gallon was an accomplished painter of the British countryside and particularly admired for his river views. Influenced by naturalists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole, he studied nature closely, yet possessed an instinctive eye for its more harmonious moments.

Here, a broad river passes quietly across the foreground, reflecting the warm tones of the surrounding trees. Beyond it, a sunlit meadow rises towards a small farmhouse, where a plume of smoke drifts from the chimney. Hills extend into the distance beneath an expansive summer sky.

But look a little closer, and there's a story unfolding… In the field, several figures are busy gathering hay. A farmer stands alongside a horse and cart, while two field hands continue their work nearby. A woman carrying a basket crosses the meadow and, amid all the activity, there's also a little dog.

There's a wonderful sense that we're witnessing a particular afternoon rather than a generic rural idyll. The hay is being gathered while we look on. Smoke is rising - at this very moment, and it feels as if we've watched the horse and cart trundle through the scenery before stopping. In another hour, everybody will have moved, and the shadows will have changed.

The composition is intelligently considered. A solitary tree marks the bend of the river and divides the brilliant hayfield from the darker woodland beyond. Reflections shimmer across the water, while occasional flashes of white suggest sunlight catching its surface. Gallon was particularly adept at river views and, in 1879, was awarded a bronze medal at Crystal Palace for a work entitled 'Brook and River'.

Gallon exhibited extensively during his career, including 27 works at the Royal Academy between 1873 and 1903. He's represented in numerous public collections.
