Robert Buchan Nisbet, Tonalist Landscape With Evening Sky

Robert Buchan Nisbet, Tonalist Landscape With Evening Sky

This late 19th-century landscape painting by Robert Buchan Nisbet (1857-1942) depicts an evening landscape in muted tones. It’s a pared-down impression of nature in all its tranquil beauty. The tonalists, such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), sought to convey the simplicity of a mood often with a subdued palette. They encouraged the imagination by reducing the form.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
