This charming mid-20th-century portrait by Belgian artist René Choprix (1888-1972) depicts a girl with a doll. It’s a sensitive portrayal and it’s probably his granddaughter.

Choprix is primarily known for his work during the Art Deco period, stylish, angular, blocky figure compositions. But later in his career, his works became somewhat quieter. It’s easy to imagine a doting grandfather producing this gentle image.

Choprix studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Brussels.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
