Poul Friis Nybo, Reading By Candlelight

Poul Friis Nybo, Reading By Candlelight

A gentle interior scene depicting an older lady reading by Danish artist, Poul Friis Nybo (1869-1929). We love the quiet introspection in this piece and you can almost hear a clock ticking.

Poul Friis Nybo is predominantly known for his interiors with many of these featuring women either writing, reading or undertaking crafts. We’ve managed to discover three other paintings that include this particular lady so it was probably someone he knew well.

Nybo studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen before attending Kristian Zahrtmann's School. He also travelled to Paris in 1905 and 1907.

The painting is signed in the upper left and housed within a period frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 25½” x 21” / 65cm x 54cm
Year of creation: c. 1915

Artist’s auction highlight: £2,800 achieved for ‘At The Window’ at Christie’s in 1996.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
