Portrait Of A Gentleman With An Earring

Portrait Of A Gentleman With An Earring

A 19th-century portrait of a fine bearded gentleman dressed to the nines and adorned with bling. Unusually, he’s wearing a gold earring in his right ear along with a brooch and a gold ring. In his right hand, he’s also holding a fancy cigarette holder which is quite prominently painted.

His outfit fits the style of the 1870s when coats were sometimes paired with lighter coloured trousers and bowties pointed downwards.

We purchased the portrait from a private seller who felt that the gentleman was Scandinavian due to the style of brooch he’s wearing.

He’s certainly a man that loves his jewellery.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
