Pierre Bokkelandt, Overcast Landscape With Figures

Pierre Bokkelandt, Overcast Landscape With Figures

This mid-20th-century landscape painting by French artist, Pierre Bokkelandt, captures the subdued mood of an overcast day. The figures are mere silhouettes as they walk towards a manor house - partially obscured by dense foliage. It’s a well-trod path, worn by years of use.

The trees are rendered akin to spirits from a lost realm - discernible only by a change in tone. Bokkelandt’s brushwork creates atmosphere - a masterclass in expression.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a frame that’s possibly the original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
