This charming early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Peter Tom-Petersen (1861-1926) depicts a Summer landscape with a view towards a bridge.
Tom-Petersen’s interesting composition draws the eye from the foreground, across the bridge, and out towards a distant crop of buildings where a Danish flag flutters in the wind. The perspective is handled adroitly while the style is somewhat impressionistic and represents his amalgamation of various teachings.
His artistic foundations were gained within the rigid structure of the Royal Danish Academy but later he broadened his approach by enrolling at the progressive Artists’ Free Study School. This was followed by a spell at the studio of Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) in Paris.
Here, in this buoyant work from 1906, we see those influences in action. An intelligent composition with keen draughtsmanship, combined with moderately loose handling and deft colour harmonies.
