Otto Straßmann, Portrait Of A Sailor

Otto Straßmann, Portrait Of A Sailor

A characterful early 20th-century portrait of a sailor by German painter, Otto Straßmann (1891-1956). This is one of Straßmann’s finest works and it’s full of expression.

Note the moisture in the deep-set eyes, the ruddy cheeks and the worn skin - aged by years of sea air. Imagine the stories he could tell… if only we knew.

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
