Ole Søndergaard, Reading By Candlelight

Ole Søndergaard, Reading By Candlelight

A beautiful depiction of a young lady reading by candlelight by Danish artist, Ole Søndergaard (1876-1958).

Here we see her sitting alongside a table as she rests a book on her lap. The glow of a single candle providing enough light to read. Two paintings hang on the wall above her, a landscape and a portrait.

Ole Søndergaard was predominantly a landscape painter and enjoyed capturing scenic views with a broad brush and a simple pared-back style. He also painted portraits of his family and this particular girl seems to feature in other works. Could it be his daughter?

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
