Niels Frederik Schiottz-Jensen, Coastal View With Moored Fishing Boat

This late 19th-century oil painting by Danish artist Niels Frederik Schiøttz-Jensen (1855-1941) depicts a beautiful coastal view with a moored rowing boat. There’s plenty of interest and a bright Mediterranean-esque palette.

The intelligent composition juxtaposes the diagonal of the boat with a jutting mooring. This draws the eye and begins our visual journey. Note the various layers - from the stony sand underfoot, across the water, and out towards the distant beach and hills.

Schiøttz-Jensen spent a great deal of time in Italy, a place he loved. Here we see the influence of the abundant Italian vistas and the glorious effects of vivid light.

Signed, dated and held in a decorative gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
