Sailboat

This mid-20th-century oil painting depicts a sailboat on the shore, possibly in Kiel, Germany.

With liberal use of impasto and a rhythmical zeal, the form of the boat draws focus as it lands on the shore. One can imagine the artist standing on the beach amid the breaking waves (presumably with the tide going out), quickly capturing the scene. The sail, partially illuminated by strong light, creates an important vertical, which anchors the design. The waves, rendered in dashes, convey movement.

The painting is signed in the lower right but the signature is difficult to decipher. It’s reminiscent of works by Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe (1875-1927) so perhaps the artist was a follower.

Signed lower left, perhaps inscribed ‘Kiel’, and framed.

Medium: Oil on board
Overall size: 15½” x 13” / 40cm x 33cm
Year of creation: c. 1950
Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
