Rural Scene With Family, Cattle & Cottage

This endlessly charming mid-19th-century English oil painting depicts a rural scene with a family, cattle, pond, and cottage.

A mother and child pause to observe a drover, perhaps father, artfully guiding his flock along a dusty country track. Beyond them, a quaint thatched cottage with a white picket fence is nestled into foliage. A family pig snuffles in the garden.

In the distance, a medieval church stands before a distant hill, while cattle graze in ample pasture. It’s a homely representation of bucolic bliss, a rose-tinted impression of imagined country life.

Stylistically, it’s a little reminiscent of works by the Norwich School of painters such as Henry Ladbrooke (1800-1870) and George Vincent (1796-1831).

Held within a gilt frame, which could be original.
