Portrait Of A Gentleman In An Armchair

This fine mid-19th-century Austrian oil painting depicts a seated gentleman wearing a black coat with a white shirt, waistcoat, stock and pinky ring.

During the 1840s, male fashion underwent a significant shift towards elegance and refinement. In the previous decade, gentlemen dressed somewhat akin to a fanciful hourglass, tucked in at the middle, with flared shoulders and coats. But ten years on and the silhouette had transformed considerably into a sharp narrow line - respectable and fitted. Gone too were the lavish colours, replaced by skilfully tailored monochromatic suits.

The identity of this dapper gent is unknown but he’s probably Austrian given the ‘Wien’ inscription in the lower left.

Signed illegibly/dated and held within a splendid gilt frame, which is probably original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
