Pastoral Landscape With Cattle & Pond

This early 20th-century oil painting by accomplished Danish artist Michael Therkildsen (1850-1925) depicts a pastoral landscape with cattle and pond.

Cows gather by a shimmering pond akin to three weary old friends under the scorching glow of mid-summer. One leans to supp, illuminated. Another pauses, looking towards the artist. A third ambles, heading for open pasture. Muscular frames emphasised by the rendering of light and shade.

Therkildsen was 71 when he painted this radiant scene. A master of figures, a multiple award-winner. His oeuvre is one of transition - from formality to freedom. Beginning his training at the Danish Academy before transitioning to ‘plein air’.

Until around 1900, his style was rooted in tradition. His landscapes were detailed representations underpinned by acute draughtsmanship. But towards the end of his career, he gave way to impressionism. Influenced by the French. In this respect, his works are fascinating to examine.

Note here the sense of movement, the bended neck, the wandering limbs. The water feels tangible as if the reflections are vibrating.

Monogrammed/dated lower left and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
