Marinus Nielsen, The Artist’s Studio

Marinus Nielsen, The Artist’s Studio

An attractive oil on canvas depicting a window of the artist’s studio in Copenhagen by Marinus Nielsen (1882-1971).

The focus here is on the array of plants that are bathed in radiant light. Towards the middle, a bouquet of daffodils takes centre stage - with their shadow cast along an orange tablecloth.

Marinus Nielsen was a painter of landscapes and interior scenes. Two of his works are held in the collection at Bornholms Kunstmuseum.

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a gilt frame, which is probably original. Also inscribed on the reverse.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 33½” x 30” / 87cm x 76cm
Year of creation: c. 1910
Provenance: Denmark
Condition: A few minor undulations. Frame with some age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
