Lucy Margaret Buck, Portrait Of A French Boy

Lucy Margaret Buck, Portrait Of A French Boy

A characterful portrait of a young French boy in a beret by English artist, Lucy Margaret Buck (1860-1911). We love the young man’s characterful and his sideways glance.

Lucy Margaret Buck was born in Ipswich and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club where she exhibited in 1881 and 1883. She also exhibited twice at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

A label on the reverse indicates that the canvas originated in Paris so it’s plausible that she encountered this young man in the French capital. It’s intriguing to consider who he was - perhaps a friend’s son.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a good later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 19” x 22½” / 49cm x 57cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Provenance: England
Condition: Very presentable overall.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
