Lily Waldron, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Trilby

Lily Waldron, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Trilby

A fabulous early 20th-century portrait of an older gentleman wearing a coat, scarf and slanted trilby hat. His eyes suggest a wisdom and quick wit, while his dapper fashion sense is borderline theatrical.

We love the way that Waldron has captured the hint of a smile - as if he could speak at any moment.

Little is known of Lily Waldron but clearly she was well trained at a reputable school. We’ve discovered an Isabel Waldron that worked around the same time so perhaps this could be her as Isabel can be shortened to ‘Lily’. If so, Isabel Waldron was represented at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and by the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. She’s also known to have worked along the south coast and London.

The portrait is housed within a later gilded frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
