Léon Barotte, A Morning View With Fisherman & Lake

Léon Barotte, A Morning View With Fisherman & Lake

A peaceful early 20th-century oil painting depicting a fisherman on a picturesque tree-lined lake.

The artist, Léon Barotte (1866-1933), has captured the light so beautifully as it cascades across the water. And the hazy sky seems to give the piece an atmospheric quality. It’s quiet and still - a place we’d all like to be.

He’s also created a clever diagonal by using a darker green in the bottom left. This visual tool guides our eye from left to right and eventually towards the distant hills.

Barotte exhibited at the Salons de Nancy and Remiremont until 1913 and at the Salon of French artists from 1912.

The painting is housed within a handsome foliate frame and signed/dated in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
