This mid-20th-century nocturne by Swedish artist Lennart Jacobson depicts an elevated urban view, perhaps in Stockholm.
The title ‘April Evening’ suggests a tranquil landscape bathed in the final embers of a broad sunset. Daubs of flora, distant hills, and a restful ambience. But here, in Jacobson’s reality, he brings us darkness. Bare trees, shimmering asphalt, and distant flickers of life hidden within anonymous office blocks. Orange lights and neon through desolate post-winter branches.
Where is he painting this from to capture such an unusual perspective? Are we looking down from a rooftop?
Little is known about Jacobson as his career was cut short at 35. His better-known works were produced during the Second World War. This intriguing piece from around 1940 alludes to a reclusive personality. An outsider looking in.
