Portrait Of A Girl

This charming late 19th-century portrait depicts a girl wearing a blue dress, gold earring and a cross pendant.

It’s rendered beautifully, particularly the skin tones with their subtle gradients. Note also the dimple in the cheek.

The painting is unsigned, as many were, but it’s highly likely that the artist trained under Frederik Vermehren at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen. The portrait exhibits several of his nuances, although the eyes here are more stylised.

Held within an extraordinary gilt frame with extensive decoration and large corner ornaments.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 20½” x 23½” / 52cm x 60cm
Year of creation: c. 1890
Condition: Artwork presents well. One minor abrasion towards the top. Frame with some wear. The darker areas above and below the portrait are reflections and not actually present on the frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
