Interior Scene With Woman Reading

This late-19th-century British School gravure depicts a lady reading within an interior setting.

Perched on the edge of a chair within a plush Victorian room, she’s immersed in correspondence. Perhaps a letter from a loved one, a potential suitor confessing their desires. She’s eager to reply yet hovers over each lovingly-penned paragraph. She could be anywhere, her heart racing while her head spins with dizzying visions.

Prints, such as these, were popular with the Victorians, particularly with the rising middle classes who sought to decorate their homes. Many were based on paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy or illustrations from well-loved novels. To add a sense of prestige, ingenious printmakers developed the craft of printing directly onto silk - as we see here.

Held in a later frame and glazed.
