This exquisite 20th-century interior scene by Danish artist Knud Sinding (1875-1946) depicts the artist’s own home.
It was painted a year before he died and captures the quiet grandeur of a place he loved.
From our viewpoint, we’re looking through into the sitting room - the walls adorned with Sinding’s works. A portrait of his wife and child hangs by a grand piano - while another probably depicts the couple together. We know, from other paintings, that the wall by the piano is covered with family memories including three of his wife, Mia. Plus several landscapes of various views.
In 1945, when this was produced, Sinding was 70 and looking back upon a successful career. Since the age of 23, he’d exhibited annually at the most prestigious venue in Denmark and was always in demand. His landscapes were often vast and captured extensive views in the Italian mountains. He adored the Italianate vistas and travelled extensively throughout his life.
But here, we see his reflective side - the quiet contemplation of an artist’s twilight years. This home was his achievement. His memories were his legacy.
