Kjell Sundberg, The Violinists

Kjell Sundberg, The Violinists

An unusual Swedish oil on board depicting several figures meandering along a cobbled street. Two of them are carrying violins. If you look closely at the building on the left, the artist has added their initials ‘KAS’ to the sign.

Kjell Arne Sundberg (b.1942) is a painter and sculptor known for his expressionistic, and often surreal, landscapes and scenes. He’s often inspired by literature so perhaps there’s a background story with this piece. His portfolio is eclectic and includes the design of Ljungby Fairytale Museum along with various wooden sculptures for public buildings.

The painting is monogrammed in the lower right and housed within a frame that’s probably its original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
