Julius Paulsen

Self-Portrait With Model

This expressive early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Julius Paulsen (1860-1940) depicts the artist at work.

With palette in hand, he quickly sketches the form of a model. Her back is turned as she leans over.

Paulsen was a master of controlled expression - using rapid, bold brushmarks within the context of his academic teaching. In this study, we see his passion, confidence and energy conveyed through twists, lines and daubs. All underpinned by a respect for the Old Masters, particularly Rembrandt. He’s one of our favourite artists here at Brave and this is a good example of his talent.

The painting was previously with his family.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
