Joseph Paulman, River Landscape With Boatman

Joseph Paulman, River Landscape With Boatman

This peaceful 19th-century landscape painting by British artist Joseph Paulman depicts a river landscape with moored boat. It evokes the tranquillity of a day resting in the picturesque English countryside.

The landscape is flat and marshy with an abundance of reeds jutting from the river. It’s reminiscent of the marshland scenery encountered in Suffolk or Norfolk. And atop the far-reaching view, the sky is particularly profound with a large rain cloud giving way to a crack of light blue.

Signed in the lower right and held within a splendid later frame with pierced corners and centres.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
