This alluring early 20th-century oil painting by German artist Joseph Block (1863-1943) depicts a lady amid an abundance of textures. Her boudoir is dark - the only light arriving via a small window. A sheet of illumination picks out her skin, yet her eyes are in the shadows. She holds a mirror and styles her hair.
This isn’t an ordinary bedroom, she’s inspired by the mystique of the Orient - immersed in her own sensuality. A rhythmical form rendered with expressive brushwork and subtle muted tones.
The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a Baroque revival frame.
