Southern Beauty

This alluring early 20th-century oil painting by German artist Joseph Block (1863-1943) depicts a lady amid an abundance of textures.

Her boudoir is dark - the only light arriving via a small window. A sheet of illumination picks out her skin, yet her eyes are in the shadows. She holds a mirror and styles her hair.

This isn’t an ordinary bedroom, she’s inspired by the mystique of the Orient - immersed in her own sensuality. A rhythmical form rendered with expressive brushwork and subtle muted tones.

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a Baroque revival frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
