Portrait Of A Man

Portrait Of A Man

This enigmatic portrait of a man by Jonas Åkesson (1879-1979) is a masterclass in charcoal.

Note the strong lines, which delineate the creases in his jacket, and continue beyond the filled areas. These were created with confidence, a series of strong marks to sketch out a form.

It's probably a self-portrait given the likeness to the artist and we've included a photograph on his directory entry.

The portrait is signed in the lower left and framed/glazed.

Jonas Åkesson was a fascinating artist and you can learn more about him in our directory.

Overall size: 25½” x 30½” / 65cm x 77cm

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
