La Seine A Paris

This impressionistic 20th-century oil painting by Belgian artist Jean Colin (1881-1961) depicts a view on the River Seine, Paris. In our elevated position on the Saint-Michel embankment, we look across to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. The river is a haze of late Summer captured in warm hues. Passers-by are picked out in near silhouette and cast long shadows. While the conspicuous monument, in silvery blue shadows, towers over the bridge.

Colin painted the view throughout the changing seasons and his palette adjusted to suit the nuances of nature and his own connection within it. Here, we see a painter enjoying his work amid the buzz of a beautiful City.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
