J W Schonnevelt Buchner, Still Life With Jug & Apples

J W Schonnevelt Buchner, Still Life With Jug & Apples

This early 20th-century Dutch school still life depicts a jug, tray and four apples in harmonious muted tones. The textures are rendered skilfully and the light carefully observed. Note the area of light hitting mid-jug, which arrives from our left. It holds the piece together - a visual anchor for the imagination.

The painting is signed in the lower left, inscribed on the reverse, and housed within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 21” x 20” / 53cm x 51cm
Year of creation: c. 1917
Condition: Canvas relined. One patched repair. Craquelure but the paint is stable.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
