Reserved - Isidor Meyers, River Landscape With Setting Sun

A beautifully rendered impressionistic landscape painting by Belgian artist, Isidor Meyers (1836-1917). With sweeping brushstrokes, he guides our eye around the river and then out towards the warm evening sun.

It’s such a clever composition with the trees and riverbank running in parallel on our left. While the river stretches out, pushing at reeds, as it swirls around to our right. The muted palette is also sublime - with its earthy tones and subtle gradients.

Meyers studied at the academy in Antwerp and was an influential figure in his day. During a stay in Paris in 1855, he became acquainted with the French Barbizon painters who were the first to truly embrace painting en plein air. This group left a lasting impression on him and influenced his expressive approach and strong, confident mark.

Several of his works are housed in the museums at Brussels and Antwerp.

The painting is signed in the lower left and held within a good later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
