Irène Bataille

Still Life With Poppies & Daisies

This mid-20th-century oil painting by Belgian artist Irène Bataille (1913-2012) depicts a vibrant arrangement of flowers, including poppies and daisies, and a brown stoneware jug. It’s a typically expressive composition, which is reminiscent of the post-impressionists.

Irène Bataille was predominantly known for landscapes, still lifes, harbour scenes and village views. Her spirited oeuvre is bustling with vibrant colours and rhythm. She trained at the Academie Berchem and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tournai holds examples of her work.

Effervescent blooms rendered with an adventurous palette.

Signed in the lower left and held in a gold frame with floral relief.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
