Herman Maurer, Wesslinger Lake

Herman Maurer, Wesslinger Lake

This impressionistic little oil painting by German artist Herman Maurer (1874-1945) captures a view across Wesslinger Lake in Bavaria. It’s a delightful array of evening tones with highlights daubed in with thick oils.

Maurer painted this in 1944, during the war, and it’s particularly poignant given its inscription.

“For friendly remembrance dedicated to Christmas 1944 in Wessling.”

Signed, inscribed and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
