Hermann Kätelhön, Two Miners

Hermann Kätelhön, Two Miners

This exquisite woodcut by German illustrator Herman Kätelhön (1884-1940) depicts two miners. They stand before the entrance of a mine - both with rugged features and tired expressions.

Between 1918 and 1940, Kätelhön produced various etchings and lithographs describing the ever-industrialised German landscape and the workers labouring within it. He held a deep respect for the mining community and immersed himself in its claustrophobic underground world.

Signed in pencil, framed and glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
