Henry Robert Robertson

Ave Maria

This fine late 19th-century etching by British artist Henry Robert Robertson (1839-1921) depicts a couple worshipping a shrine to the Virgin Mary at sea.

The original painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1879.

The couple sailed to this location, which appears to be coastal, maybe Italy. He’s standing with hat respectfully held to his chest, while the female bows her head in prayer. Is this a pilgrimage? Have they travelled across land and sea? Or are they seeking a blessing for a long voyage ahead?

Robertson hailed from Windsor and exhibited numerous works at the Royal Academy between 1969-1904.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
