This early 20th-century oil painting by British artist Henry Hillingford Parker (1858-1930) depicts a dramatic pastoral view at Glen Falloch in Perthshire, Scotland.
The brute forms of highland cattle graze upon rugged terrain as sunlight gleams through scattered pockets of blue. The sky brisk and wispy - an overcast morning within earshot of the Falloch.
Parker’s sharp brushwork creates palpable movement. As if, in a moment, the sky could clear and transform the topography. The light we witness is occasional and fleeting.
He often ventured north in search of epic peaks and enchanting lochs. It’s a long haul from London and entirely otherworldly.
The name Glenfalloch derives from the Gaelic 'Gleann-falaich’ or ‘valley of concealment’.
