Harald Sallberg, Meditation

Harald Sallberg, Meditation

This intriguing and rather stylish etching by Swedish artist, Harald Sallberg (1895-1963) depicts an artist in his studio contemplating a large canvas. A quiet moment - taking it all in.

The composition is unusual - the easel draws the eye but the space creates a narrative. It alludes to the tension between an artist and his work - it’s the space in between, the intangible void.

The etching is signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
