Hans Tschelan, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Pipe

Hans Tschelan, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Pipe

A characterful portrait of a man with a pipe by Austrian artist, Hans Tschelan (1873-1964).

Tschelan trained at the Weimar Academy and later studied in Paris and Florence. In around 1905, he settled in the Batschka region (Serbia/Hungary) where he enjoyed painting everyday scenes featuring local people.

It’s possible that this gentleman is from that region and perhaps this was a study to prepare for a group scene.

The portrait is housed within a decorative gilded frame and signed/dated in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
