Tranquil River Landscape

Hans Best

Tranquil River Landscape

This far-reaching early 20th-century landscape painting by German artist Hans Best (1874-1942) depicts a tranquil vista with distant hills.

Its large size creates a window on your wall - it brings the outdoors in.

Through the centre of the composition, a river draws the eye and carries our attention out towards the middle ground. Gentle ripples reflect sunlight muted by clouds while the riverbank creates a shadow at the bend.

Best isn’t seeking to romanticise this verdant countryside, he’s simply capturing it in all its true beauty. By doing so, it creates a calm splendour.

Signed, inscribed on the reverse and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
