Gustav Vermehren, Rural Landscape With Man Sawing Wood

Gustav Vermehren, Rural Landscape With Man Sawing Wood

This charming rural scene by Danish artist, Gustav Vermehren (1863-1931), depicts an older gentleman sawing wood by a rustic cottage. Splendid summer light bathes the flora, bringing life and vibrancy. While a gentle breeze rustles atop a wheatfield.

Vermehren’s works often celebrate the less-conspicuous moments of rural life and this is a good example. He favoured reason over experimentation - traditionalism over modernism. With exquisitely controlled brushwork, he elevated the ordinary with his own sense of poetry.

The painting is signed in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
