Godefroy Durand, Saint’s Day Procession, France

Godefroy Durand, Saint’s Day Procession, France

This exquisite 19th-century drawing by French illustrator Godefroy Durand (1832-1896) depicts a Saint’s Day Procession in France. It’s rendered skilfully with each figure given its own character and story.

Durand was one of the great illustrators of his generation. He worked for several leading publications including The Graphic, a British newspaper. It’s interesting to consider whether this drawing relates to a commission, perhaps to accompany an article on the procession.

Other drawings by Durand are held in the Royal Collection, the William Morris Gallery, London, and the British Museum.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
