19th Century German School, Portrait Of A Lady With A Bonnet

19th Century German School, Portrait Of A Lady With A Bonnet

A characterful portrait of a middle-aged lady wearing a blue dress and a fancy lace bonnet with a bow.

We love the way she’s peering to one side - perhaps a little awkwardly. She seems like quite a shy lady or maybe she’s just looking forward to wearing something more comfortable.

We’ve dated the portrait to around 1840 but it could be earlier.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 10” x 13” / 26cm x 33cm
Year of creation: c. 1840
Provenance: Germany
Condition: Extensive craquelure throughout and some minor losses. Scuffing around the periphery due to its previous frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
