Berlin Evening Landscape With St Thomas Church

This early 20th-century oil on canvas by German artist Gerhard Graf (1883-1960) depicts Berlin in the evening with the church of St Thomas in the background. Graf was born in Berlin and knew this area well.

Two street lights shimmer on either side of the Spree River, which twists past the church and away to our left. Strips of radiant light reflect near-turquoise across the vivid water. The streets are alive with the buzz of citizens - an electricity that vibrates throughout the vista.

Signed in the lower right and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
