This mid-20th-century oil painting by German artist Gerhard Arnold (b.1938) depicts a rugged autumnal landscape.
Wrapped up within this skilful little painting are four areas to examine. In the foreground, an array of earthy tones are dabbed with impressionistic finesse. Towards the middle, several homes peep from established foliage. On the left, the vertical forms of trees echo the blueish tints on the right. While above, the clouds are rendered in layers. It’s a quiet ensemble of deftly handled elements. A modest masterpiece.
Gerhard Arnold is a living artist and this is a fine example of his work.
Signed lower right and held within a contemporary frame.
