The Finishing Touch

The Finishing Touch

This early 20th-century watercolour by British artist George Goodwin Kilburne (1845-1932) depicts a loving scene from the early 19th century.

With her daughter looking on, mother adjusts father’s buttonhole flower, which appears to be a white rose. She’s wearing a beautiful classically-inspired dress.

Kilburne was well-versed in capturing delicate moments within the homes of the upper classes and his works were popular throughout his life.

Signed lower right, inscribed on the reverse and held within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
