Georg Richter-Lossnitz, Surprised Bandits

Georg Richter-Lossnitz, Surprised Bandits

This dramatic oil painting by German artist Georg Richter-Lossnitz (1891-1938) depicts a swirl of horses as three bandits are ambushed. It’s an electrifying scene with dust kicked up as the beasts skid on the earth. One rider losing his hat in the haste.

Richter-Lossnitz was known for his expressive style but this is a particularly vigorous example. It’s titled ‘Surprised Bandits’ and probably inspired by the popularity of Western films in the early 20th century.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
