Georg Achen, Portrait Study Of A Bearded Gentleman

Georg Achen, Portrait Study Of A Bearded Gentleman

This late 19th-century portrait study by Danish artist, Georg Achen (1860-1912), depicts a bearded gentleman in profile. The sitter is unknown but characterised by heavy eyelids, an extensive beard and a receding hairline.

In 1883, when Achen produced this, he was studying under the gifted Danish painter, P.S. Kroyer (1851-1909) - and the influence of the master is evident.

The portrait is signed in the lower right and housed within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
